INDUSTRY LEADERS SPONSOR QUAKECON 2001
MESQUITE, Texas - Aug. 9, 2001 - Giants in the digital entertainment and technology space are joining with id
Software to sponsor QuakeCon 2001, the ultimate video game party, convention and tournament,
Aug. 9 -12 in Mesquite, Texas.
id Software, NVIDIA, Activision, AMD, Linksys, and Discreet are providing financial support, demoing their latest
breakthrough products and donating technology for the event.
"QuakeCon 2001 is going to this year's PC gaming Mecca, as the industry's most cutting-edge companies will show
their latest products and hottest new games," Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software, said. "If you're a gamer, you
have to check it out or be prepared to die unhappy."
NVIDIA
The world's leading graphics accelerator company will sponsor the first NVIDIA QUAKE III Arena Championships
at QuakeCon, boasting $50,000 in cash and prizes. The company will provide geForce3 graphics cards for all 48
tournament machines as well as the demonstration computers for Return to Castle Wolfenstein
TM. In addition, NVIDIA's booth will have 12 geForce3-equipped
PCs where QuakeCon participants will face off against members of the id Software development team in the
"id Challenge." The company is also putting up two geForce3 cards for the winner of the Object Model Competition.
Activision, Inc.
Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) will unveil the advanced multiplayer features of the upcoming hit Return to
Castle Wolfenstein, the heart-stopping follow-up to one of the most revered PC games of all time and provide
hands on demonstrations of the title in the exhibitor room. The company will also be showing
Soldier of Fortune®: II Double Helix, the sequel to one of the top
first-person action games of 2000. DOOMTM for Gameboy Advance
will be revealed to gamers for the first time. Based on the most popular action-shooter of all time, id Software's
DOOM for Game Boy Advance features all of the frenetic, adrenaline-pumping action and immersive gameplay from the
original PC game.
AMD
AMD is a three-time hardware sponsor of QuakeCon. The company will provide more than 90 cutting-edge
systems for the event, including Athlon MP servers for the tournament and bring-your-own-computer (BYOC)
area. This is the first time Athlon MP processors are being used in a LAN-gamer event. All competition
PCs will be provided by AMD and equipped with Athlon 1.3 GHz chips while eight demonstration machines for
Return to Castle Wolfenstein will be armed with Athlon 1.4 GHZ systems. AMD will also provide Athlon
PCs for the press area.
Discreet
Discreet will announce the availability of gmaxTM, the company's
licensable game development platform and free consumer game-content editor based on the flexible tools found in
3ds maxTM, the world's best-selling
3D animation platform. In addition, Discreet will show its own prototype game pack editor for QUAKE III Arena,
demonstrating the enhanced workflow and flexibility of gmax. The game pack will be provided to
gmax development licensees in 'source-code' format - offering a real-world example of how to
implement gmax in any game production pipeline.
Linksys
This is Linksys' third year as the core network sponsor for QuakeCon. The company will supply more than 100
10/100 ethernet switches for the BYOC LAN network and tournament areas as well as all networking for the sponsor
booths. The LAN will be capable of supporting a major corporation of more than 1,200 employees. In the sponsor
room, Linksys will show wireless LAN equipment, broadband routers, hubs/switches, network gaming kits and provide
discount sales of 10/100 LAN cards to registrants.
About QuakeCon 2001
QuakeCon 2001 will be the largest gathering in the event's six-year history. More than 3,000 gamers are
expected to make the journey to Texas from around the world. Participants will battle 24 hours a day in
the 1,250 person, BYOC area and learn about game development from industry icons in four days of workshops
and discussions.
QuakeCon began in 1996 as a LAN party dedicated to fans of id Software's games and has grown to include
QUAKE®, QUAKE IITM,
QUAKE III Arena and QUAKE III: Team ArenaTM. It was created
